It’s been six days since Mei Xiang gave birth to a new panda cub, Butterstick II, and we’re all still a little on edge here at DCist. After all, it was on the sixth day after Mei gave birth last year that her cub died from lung and liver damage.
But worry not, says the National Zoo in the latest press release: Butterstick II is doing fine!
Still not convinced? Here’s some video evidence of Butterstick II in good health, squawking away like nobody’s business.
According to the release, you can see that Butterstick II is in good health.
The tiny cub has a round belly which indicates to the panda team that it is nursing well. Also, the cub has a great set of lungs. There is a lot of squawking until Mei carefully picks the cub up again and cradles it.
Of course, Mei is still wary about the keepers taking her cub for examination and is “much more aware when they enter her den space to offer her food.” But all reports still indicate that both mother and child are doing fine, just fine.
Phew.
