Gabor Louasz, the Hungarian driver of a tractor-trailer that collided with a car and sent it careening over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge earlier this summer, has been charged with “failure to control speed to avoid a collision, lane changing, negligent driving and speed greater than reasonable and prudent on highway,” according to a release from the Maryland Transportation Authority. He could be fined $670.
According to police reports, Louasz became distracted by lights and sirens behind him when he collided with 24-year-old Morgan Lake’s 2007 Chrysler Sebring, sandwiching it between the truck and another car before sending it over the edge to the water, 27-feet below. From the release:
The investigation revealed that the Chrysler had slowed to approximately four mph when it was struck by the tractor trailer. Based on a data download of the tractor’s Engine Control Module and Antilock Braking System, investigators believe that it was traveling between 47 and 51 mph just prior to the crash. Vehicle inspections by the Maryland State Police Automotive Safety Enforcement Division and MDTA Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Unit indicated no mechanical defects were present at the time of the inspections following the crash.
Luckily, Morgan swam to safety and only received minor injuries.
