Well, this is some sad news: Josh Burdette, manager, crew chief, and “That Guy” at the 9:30 Club, has passed away.

News of Burdette’s untimely passing first spread on Twitter and Facebook this morning before a spokesperson for the 9:30 Club confirmed the unfortunate news to the Washington City Paper. It’s not yet clear how the 37-year-old passed away, but it comes as quite a shock to the D.C. music community.

For anyone that’s ever been to the 9:30 Club, you know what a fixture Josh was at the place. At six-foot-three, 340-pounds, Josh was a mountain of a man, and quite an intimidating presence too, with many piercings, huge gauges, and full tattoo sleeves. But anyone that’s ever talked to him knows he was one of the most genuine, friendly, and cheery people in the D.C. music scene. His attitude and personality were as legendary as his demeanor, which led to him becoming the unofficial “face of the 9:30 Club.”

We’ll have a longer obituary for Josh tomorrow, and we’ll update this post when we know more about his unfortunate passing. In the meantime, friends and musicians from all over are mourning this devastating loss to the D.C. community.

Update: A Montgomery County Police spokesperson confirmed to DCist that Burdette’s death is being investigated as a possible suicide. No further details have been released.
