Prepare to be horrified: A deceased dog was found wrapped in a blanket inside a dumpster in Southeast D.C. in late August, the Washington Humane Society says.

The pitbull-type dog “was found to be underweight with extremely long nails and a large wound on his rear right leg” when it was discovered in a dumpster at the 3100 block of Buena Vista Terrace SE, according to a release. Humane law enforcement officer Ann Russell said the agency has “reason to believe that this was an owned dog that suffered greatly prior to his death.”

A $2,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for the dog’s death.

In late July, a dog was found shot four times in Northeast D.C. The animal had to be euthanized. WHS spokeswoman ChristieLyn Diller says the case is still open and they have received a “few leads since issuing the announcement and reward.”

Below is a photo of the dog found in the dumpster. Warning: It’s graphic and absolutely heartbreaking.
