The District of Columbia is considering becoming your mother as it may begin telling you to just think for a day about getting a tattoo or body piercing. Just one day, OK? It’s the rest of your life!
As former DCist editor Martin Austermuhle first reported for WAMU, the Department of Health released new Body Art Establishment regulations Friday. The regulations include a 24-hour wait for body art and modification from the time requested to the time inked/pierced, as well as a ban on tattoos and piercings, except ones in the ears, for people under the age of 18.
The city only began regulating tattoo artists and body piercers last year. Now D.C. could become home to some of the toughest rules in America.
So why exactly is the city proposing this wait? The DOH’s spokeswoman Najma Roberts told WAMU that the waiting period is modeled after one in Wisconsin. , and she has yet to return DCist’s request for comment. Roberts reiterated this to DCist: “We pulled from models across the country.”
“Essentially these regs were drafted for the health and safety of those seeking to get tattoos and or piercing,” Roberts said in an email. “This prevents decisions being made by persons who are intoxicated or may have a spur of the moment idea, but regret it later.”
If you’re not a fan of these proposed regulations, you have 30 days to speak up.
Persons wishing to comment on these proposed rules should submit written comments no later than thirty (30) days after the date of publication of this notice in the D.C. Register, to the Office of the General Counsel, Department of Health, 899 North Capitol Street, N.E., Room 547, 65 Washington, D.C. 20002. Copies of the proposed rules may be obtained from the above address, excluding weekends and holidays. You may also submit your comments to Angli Black at (202)442-5977 or email Angli.Black@dc.gov.
