You can’t make this stuff up: A Montgomery County trash worker on strike was hit by a garbage truck while protesting this morning.

Montgomery County trash workers are on day three of striking for better health care benefits and higher wages. During this morning’s protest in front of the Potomac Disposal center’s gate entrance, at the 19100 block of Woodfield Road in Potomac, one of the protesters was struck by a garbage truck operated by a replacement driver.

As first reported by CBS DC, the truck was leaving the operations center at about 6:40 this morning “when it jumped a curb and struck the man” who was part of a large group of protesters. A video of the incident is on CBS DC’s website, but, disclaimer: It contains some offensive language.

A Montgomery County Police spokesperson tells DCist that the protester was struck at the gate entrance when the driver of the garbage truck “failed to control his speed to avoid collision, lost control, and hopped the curb and hit the pedestrian.” The spokesperson also said that the pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital to treat non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver has been cited with “failing to control speed,” the spokesperson tells us.
