Daniel Snyder: Washington football team; $1 billion; Potomac, Md.
In a recent interview with 106.7 The Fan, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell discussed the controversy over the Washington Football Team’s racist name, saying that the NFL needs to “always [be] sensitive to what impacts the league” and make sure it’s “doing what’s right.”
In the 106.7 interview reported on by the AP, Goodell said that “If we are offending one person, we need to be listening and making sure that we’re doing the right things to try to address that.” But he didn’t take a personal stance on the team’s controversial name, instead saying that the NFL is “listening.”
“But,” Goodell added, “it is something that I want all of us to go out and make sure we’re listening to our fans, listening to people who have a different view, and making sure that we continue to do what’s right to make sure that team represents the strong tradition and history that it has for so many years.”
Recently, controversy over the name has heated up as many different publications have come out against it, refusing to publish the team’s name, as well as several area politicians. The Oneida Indian Nation of New York even launched a massive radio campaign this season to urge Goodell to do something about the team’s offensive name.
Of course, Goodell reminded The Fan that the decision isn’t up to him, but up to Washington’s owner Dan Snyder, who has vowed that he’ll “NEVER” change the team’s name.
So, I guess there’ll just be more of this until the end of time?
