Sylvan Esso is the duo of Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn. Both are not new to the scene as Meath is one third of the folky group Mountain Man and Sanborn is a member of the collective Megafaun. The group made waves last year at the Hopscotch Music Festival, and this year played an even bigger stage.
Although they only have one 12″ to their name, the band was picked to open for Volcano Choir. The band’s sound are created by the layering and looping of Meath’s voice and Sanborn’s electronic textures. “Hey Mami” is one side of their single, and it is a stunner. The track starts with Meath’s voice acapella slowly adding more and more until the song has an expertly timed drop and Sanborn’s pulsing beat rushes in.
Sylvan Esso play tomorrow night with Volcano Choir at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $25.
