MUSIC: At 7:30 p.m., you can watch the finals of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition, saxophone edition, hosted by Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk Jr. This will be followed by an All-Star Gala Concert, proceeds from which support public school jazz education programs. $50-75.
FILM: As a founding member of the 1970s New German Cinema movement, Margarethe von Trotta created movies with “strong women ahead of their time,” according to the Goethe Institute’s blurb about their film series, Women in History as played by Barbara Sukowa, which continues tonight at 6:30 p.m. with Marianne and Juliane (Die bleierne Zeit). Sukowa was the leading actress in many of von Trotta’s works. Films in German with English subtitles. $4/$7.
NERDERY: The Art and Style of Graphic Novels will be held at Politics and Prose at 7 p.m., moderated by Glen Weldon, author of Superman: The Unauthorized Biography and a contributor to NPR’s pop culture blog and podcast. Panel will feature graphic novelists Laura Lee Gulledge, Rutu Modan, Matt Phelan, and Gene Yang. P&P’s website also touts “beer and wine” to be had there.
AGING ROCK STARS: Graham Nash will give at talk (with interviewer Bob Spitz) at the Library of Congress at 7 p.m., promoting his new book, Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life. He’ll sign copies after. Free, but you should probably get there early. In the Madison Building, Montpelier Room on the sixth floor.
LECTURES: Historian C.R. Gibbs will give a talk titled “Racism 101,” at the Francis A. Gregory Library at 7 p.m., part of the library’s ongoing events around the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.
BRYAN CRANSTON: If you’re as breathless and shaken as we are about last night’s Breaking Bad, here’s a chance to see more of the masterful actor who gave us Walter White/Heisenberg. The B-Crans plays a supporting role (along with the killer soundtrack) in Drive, the 2011 Ryan Gosling vehicle (VEHICLE. Get it? See what we did there?) showing tonight at AFI Silver Spring at 9:15 p.m. Tckets are half-price as a Monday night special.
