Twins Katie and Allison Crutchfield have been playing in bands for years. But then the two decided to put their beloved emo band P.S. Eliot to rest, the sisters split and went their separate musical ways. Alison started Swearin’ and Katie retreated to her bedroom to record confessional tracks under the name Waxahatchee. On her 2012 debut American Weekend, Katie Crutchfield sang about her life on tracks so lo-fi you can hear the background noise from the room the tracks were recorded in. When Crutchfield recorded her second album, Cerulean Salt, she opted to use a band instead of handling everything herself. She enlisted Kyle Gilbride and Keith Spencer on bass and drums from her sister’s band to add to her arrangements, creating a fuller record. “Bother Bryan” makes the most of the bass and drums, as the track lacks any of Crutchfield’s guitar.
Waxahatchee play tonight with Screaming Females and Tenement at the Black Cat. Tickets are $13.
