Austra is the electro-rock band fronted by Katie Stelmanis, who first used the moniker as a solo project but has since created a group including drummer Maya Postepski and Dorian Wolf. The band’s first record Feel It Break was a perfect combination of atmospherics and Stelmanis’ operatic voice. The inspiration of the tracks shifted from dark electronic tones to early techno and Detroit house.

The influence is felt on “Home” which starts with a simple piano track that if sped up would work on a house track. The beat then locks in and feels like a slower Disclosure track with Stelmanis’ voice being the glue holding everything together. Her vocal abilities have grown more assured, where Austra’s first record Stelmanis would go for the large notes, on Olympia she has shown some restraint, allowing her voice to flourish.

Austra play tomorrow night with Diana at the black cat. Tickets are $15.
