Toronto darkwave band Austra brought their A-game Thursday night at the Black Cat. Having previously played some of the smaller rooms in D.C., the band made the move to a larger stage with ease. The quartet stuck to material from the band’s recently released sophomore full-length Olympia, but threw in a couple favorites like “The Beat and Pulse” from their debut record Feel it Break.
The band’s live presence has matured tremendously. The addition of new stage props, dramatic lighting and an additional keyboardist and backing vocalist has rounded out the band’s sound. Katie Stelmanis’ operatic vocal stylings boomed through the club’s speakers. Single “Home” from Olympia and Feel it Break’s “Lose It” were highlights from the set. While the lighting was mostly kept to blue, the umbrellas would light up in many colors matching the beat of each song perfectly. Like the band’s records Austra’s live show treads the line between dark and light expertly.
