This is cool: The Washington Capitals will most likely host the NHL’s Winter Classic in 2015, according to The Post.
Although it’s not confirmed yet, a league source tells the Post that Caps majority owner Ted Leonsis “will announce Saturday morning that the team will host the 2015 NHL Winter Classic.” But, as exciting as this is, there’s still a lot that’s up in the air, such as, where will they play? And who will they play? Well, the Nationals Stadium is a likely option, considering Nats owner Mark Lerner’s connection to the Capitals:
The location of the contest and the Capitals’ opponent for it is still unknown, but considering Nationals owner Mark Lerner is a minority partner in Leonsis’s Monumental Sports and Entertainment, Nationals Park in Southeast Washington may be a likely candidate. The Nationals lease the ballpark from the District, though, and would not have exclusive control over such a decision.
One option that Leonsis already ruled out, unfortunately, would be the coolest location for the NHL’s annual New Year’s Day outdoor hockey game: The National Mall.
“The idea of a game being played on the Mall has been floated around for many years – it is NOT feasible; there aren’t enough common areas to build out seats,” Leonsis wrote on Jan. 3, 2012. “And the expense involved to create locker rooms; ice stands and studios are prohibitive. The Mall is managed by the National Park Service, as well.”
The Caps last took part in the Winter Classic back in 2011, where they spanked the Penguins 3-1 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh.
