Stamps will still look like this, but be 20 cents more. Image via Shutterstock.
Looks like the cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service wants to raise stamp prices in 2014 by three cents.
According to AP, Mickey Barnett, the chairman of the U.S.P.S. Board of Governors, says that the “precarious financial condition” of the agency has forced them to propose raising the price of a first-class stamp to 49 cents. This increase would “raise about $2 billion in additional revenue a year,” USA Today reports.
Currently, the U.S.P.S. is expecting to lose $6 billion this year, as it awaits prospects for “postal overhaul legislation in Congress,” of which the future is uncertain. In order for the Postal Service’s stamp-hike to go through, it must be approved by the independent Postal Regulatory Commission
Ugh, can’t we just send everything through a 3D printer yet?
