D.C.’s Teen Mom might share a name with a popular MTV series about unfortunate people in a terrible situation, but all comparisons stop there. The band shared/ripped off the sound of New Jersey bedroom act Real Estate but have transformed into something less derivative. The band’s 2012 EP Mean Tom, had its moment, but the band’s recently released Gilly EP is an improvement. The album, recorded at Inner Ear Studios is full of long songs taking inspiration for shoegaze. “Kitchen” the EP’s single is a staggering six minutes double the length of the average length of the band’s first EP. The guitars strum like New Order’s slower moments, while singer Chris Kelly’s vocals are even more buried in the mix. While the band still considers themselves to be beach pop, “Kitchen” is less beach and more ocean.
Teen Mom play tonight with Brett at Chez Billy. Tickets are $15. Teen Mom also play tomorrow with Janel and Anthony at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Tickets to this even are free.
