Capital Bikeshare has once again left the capital city, as the extremely popular bike-sharing service officially launched in Montgomery County this morning.
Fourteen new stations are now open in Maryland, as the Capital Bikeshare map shows, and over 30 more will be installed.
Here’s information about the system, via Montgomery County’s bikeshare website.
Downcounty Bikeshare System
30 bikeshare stations 250 bikes Service area: along the East and West legs of the Metrorail Red Line from the District Line to Silver Spring/Takoma Park on the East and Friendship Heights, Bethesda and Medical Center Metro on the West Rockville/Shady Grove/Life Sciences Center Bikeshare System
21 bikeshare stations 200 bikes Service area:Parts of the City of Rockville, Shady Grove, and the Life Sciences Ctr Special focus: part of a pilot program to extend BikeShare to lower income workers commuting to work or education and training.
“Bikesharing is proving to be a phenomenal success in the region having recently celebrated its five millionth rider, and we have no doubt that Montgomery County residents, employees, retail and restaurant patrons, and other visitors will also be enthusiastic participants,” Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett said, according to Mass Transit Magazine.
Capital Bikeshare, which recently turned three, previously expanded into Alexandria and Arlington, Va. According to recent Census data, more people than ever are using bikes to commute to work.
