Toronto’s mopey indie-pop quintet Stars have been releasing albums since 2001, with the band’s most recent being 2012’s The North. While still keeping up with Stars, some members have also moonlighted in other groups, like fellow canucks Broken Social Scene. The band has evolved from their electronic beginnings by adding several members, and are now going strong with a five-person line up, which includes songwriters Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan.

To celebrate the band’s fall tour with a stop tonight at the 9:30 Club , Stars released a two-song 7-inch featuring unheard recordings from The North sessions. On the A side is “Wishful,” a Millan-fronted no-frills rock song that boasts some stadium-rock ambition in the chorus. The track also features some shoegazey synths to add a nice balance to the soothing guitars. The middle section of the track has a suspiciously Broken Social Scene-esque breakdown, but does so to satisfy fan needs for that particular brand of indie rock.

Stars play tonight with High Highs at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $25.
