We interrupt your regularly scheduled exhaustive coverage of the federal government shutdown and all the trouble it brings to our fair city with this little bit of cool news: The D.C. Council passed a ceremonial resolution today recognizing just how awesome the 9:30 Club is.

During this morning’s Council meeting, a resolution—proposed by Council Member David Catania (I-At Large)— to “recognize the 9:30 Club for being an iconic venue for live musical and other entertainment for the residents of the District of Columbia and to honor the 9:30 Club for its designation as the Best Big-Room Venue in America by Rolling Stone, Top Club by Billboard Touring Awards and Nightclub of the Year by Pollstar Magazine” passed unanimously, obviously.

In an email to DCist, Seth Hurwitz, chairman of I.M.P. and co-owner of the 9:30 Club, said that “It’s especially cool for me because I don’t really know David, although I have always appreciated his work and integrity. So for someone to independently recognize us, through the Council, and not be a hookup from a friend…this means a lot…The 9:30 Club was started by Dody DiSanto on F St in 1980…these were Pioneer Days. She deserves the credit for creating the unstoppable gathering place for people that want to see live music in a place run by people that want to present live music. A lot of people have stuck it out in DC since those days, and our city has turned out to be an organically vibrant place with real roots. It’s very exciting to be a part of it, and hard to believe that it is happening right in front of us. Wow.”

The Council also recognized the 9:30 Club for helping “launch some of the District’s best home-grown acts, including the Chuck Brown Band, Foo Fighters, Black Flag, Fugazi and others.” Also, because Patrick Stump of Fallout Boy said the 9:30 Club has “got so much character, you wonder if the locals know how lucky they are.”

Thanks, Patrick, we know.
