Yesterday, Ford’s Theatre was forced to relocate its scheduled press performance of The Laramie Project due to the federal government shutdown. Now it looks like it’ll be canceling its run of the play indefinitely (or, at least until Congress gets their act together and reopens the government).
In an email to DCist, Ford’s Theatre associate director of communications Lauren Beyea writes that “all performances at Ford’s Theatre National Historic Site through October 6 have been canceled.” Because Ford’s Theatre operates within a national historic site, it’s managed by the National Park Service—which is one of the many agencies affected by the shutdown—despite the fact that the Ford’s Theatre society is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
But there’s a bit of a silver lining! Beyea says that Ford’s has found an alternative space to host two free performances of The Laramie Project during the shutdown. They’ll take place Friday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. and Tuesday October 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ located at 945 G Street NW.
When the shutdown is over and Ford’s Theatre is allowed to reopen, daytime visits and The Laramie Project will resume as scheduled.
