Sure, we may be in the middle of a federal government shutdown, leaving thousands of non-essential government employees furloughed until further notice (no idea when that notice is going to come), but those essential employees still gotta eat.

Two of those essential employees, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, were hungry today, so they did what any hungry essential federal employees would do: They went to the Taylor Gourmet on Pennsylvania Avenue for lunch, shutdown be damned.

According to a White House Pool report, Obama told press “Part of the reason we’re here is we’re starving. The other reason we’re here is that this establishment is giving out 10 percent off to furloughed (employees). This is an indication of how ordinary Americans are looking out for one another.”

They were starving!

Obama, who’s previously eaten at Taylor, also told press that the House has the opportunity to end the shutdown “right now,” and that he’s “happy to have negotiations but we can’t do it with a gun held to the head of the American people.” Meanwhile, Biden ordered the 9th Street Sub.

Could this mean that an end to the shutdown is coming soon? Well, apparently House Speaker John Boehner also really likes Taylor Gourmet.
