Mount Kimbie is a London duo that formed in 2008 when dubstep was just finishing. The group are part of the post-dubstep movement along with cohorts Joy Orbison, Girl Unit and James Blake, who has joined the duo live. After a set of EPs, the band released their first record Crooks & Lovers to great acclaim. Arriving at the moment when dubstep was a dirty word, and acts like Skrillex were known for big beats and huge drops, Mount Kimbie’s sound was more relaxed and dance floor focused. For the band’s sophomore record, this year’s Cold Spring Fault Less Youth, the duo doubled down on the jazzy R&B vibes and employed more live instrumentation. “You Took Your Time” is just one of two King Krule (Archy Marshall) features on the record and is one of the best songs Mount Kimbie has released. The relaxed track is a slow grind, fitting Marshall’s sing-speak vocals. The track has a lot in common with James Blake’s productions, taking something simple and building and building until the track reaches a maximum impact.

Mount Kimbie play tonight with Jonwayne and D33J at the Black Cat. Tickets are $15 adv, $18 at the door.
