Mary Timony performing with Wild Flag.
From Helium to Autoclave to Wild Flag, and many other projects in between, Mary Timony’s storied career has gone through numerous iterations. Now, with Wild Flag on hiatus, Timony’s got something new to unleash unto the world: Ex Hex.
Timony teased the project last month when we caught up with her before the Black Cat’s 20th anniversary shows, but now the first track from the band is up on Bandcamp. So what’s the deal with Ex Hex? Well, the title comes from the name of Timony’s 2005 solo album, other than that, details are scarce. No one knows who else is in the group, or if they plans for a full album, or anything really (although Arts Desk reports that Aquarium drummer Laura Harris and Betsey Wright are involved), but they’re playing a show tonight at Rock & Roll Hotel with Obits.
Anyway, the track, predictably, rips. Timony’s guitar wails over the steady, marching rhythm. Like Wild Flag, the track is heavily steeped in the influence of ’70s-inspired psych and prog rock, but with Timony’s signature touch. It’s a bouncy, if subdued number, and will definitely excite any fan of Timony’s music.
Ex Hex plays Rock & Roll Hotel tonight with Obits, Title Tracks, and Cane & The Sticks, and on October 18 at Comet Ping Pong as part of Shred Fest.
