It’s been six years since Sean Taylor—the Washington football team’s star safety—was killed. The 24-year-old died from a gunshot wound to the femoral artery, after he was shot in an alleged home invasion by Eric Rivera and five other suspects. Now, Rivera will finally stand trial.

So, what took so long? Well, it’s not entirely clear because of a “media gag order issued by Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Dennis Murphy,” the Miami Herald reports. But most of the delay has come from “scheduling conflicts and Rivera switching attorneys several times.” The other men accused of breaking into Taylor’s home in Palmetto Bay in November of 2007 are all awaiting trial dates, with the exception of one who has already pleaded guilty.

According to police reports, one of Rivera’s friends had attended a party at Taylor’s house, thrown by Taylor’s brother and sister, a month before the shooting. After hearing about all the money Taylor had given to his siblings from his friend, he concocted a plan to break into his house when he believed he wouldn’t be home.

The Herald reports the full police report on the night of the shooting:

On the night of Nov. 25, 2007, police believe the group — all teen-agers at the time — drove in a rented SUV to Miami. At about 1:40 a.m. the next morning, they broke into the home looking for a stash of cash, according to police reports.

Rivera, according to police reports, kicked in the master bedroom door where Taylor and his girlfriend were sleeping alongside their infant daughter. Taylor grabbed a machete he kept near the bed and charged. Rivera, police believe, shot Taylor in the groin before escaping. The football player was rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he died the following day.

Rivera is standing trial for first-degree murder and armed burglary charges. Jury selection begins tomorrow and if he’s convicted, he could serve a life sentence.
