Frankie Rose started as the drummer for NYC garage-goth band Crystal Stilts, before moving on to a short tenure in the Vivian Girls and Dum Dum Girls. In 2009, Rose started her own band, Franke Rose and the Outs, releasing a full-length in 2010. The Outs were short lived, but gave Rose an ability to flex her songwriting muscles, as she was mostly a hired gun in both of her former bands. The Out’s record continued in the garage rock genre Rose’s previous bands were known for. But in 2012 Rose dropped the Outs and went fully solo with the record Interstellar.
Rose took in 80s new wave influences, as well as post-punk making her defining statement. The vocals and synths were icy, but Rose’s garage rock mentality grounded the record. This year, Rose followed up Interstellar with Herein Wild, an album expanding on Interstellar‘s 80s leanings with something a bit more rock. “Sorrow” is a jangly number form the record cut from the same cloth as other bands like Wild Nothing and Beach Fossils. Rose’s processed vocals propel the gothy pop tune, while the pleasant sounding guitars soothe.
Franke Rose plays with Franz Ferdinand on Thursday at the Strathmore. Tickets are $58.50.
