Noise/electronic duo Fuck Buttons have been making uncompromisingly loud music for the past five years. The band’s debut LP, Street Horrrsing, was a blast of noise that, while unconventional, employed melodies that hinted at a larger sound. The band used various noise toys to compliment their mix of vintage synths and distorted vocals, which sounded mighty menacing. But with the band’s second record, Tarot Sport, Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power pushed the envelope further, smoothing out some of their rough edges and making some of the most epic and accessible avant-garde music. Their tracks “Olympians” and “Surf Solar” got an even bigger push when they were featured in the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony.
For the band’s latest release Slow Focus, Fuck Buttons doubled down on both their epic soundscapes and noisy passages to make their best record yet. Inspired by hip-hop, EDM, and avant-garde, Slow Focus is a masterwork. The record’s first single “The Red Wing” is the most danceable track the band has ever made. Riding a beat made with clicks and bells, the track starts smooth but ends loud with a sinister bass line. The band may have foregone vocals, but the track is still dynamic without them.
Fuck Buttons play tonight at U Street Music Hall. Tickets are $20.
