With the government shutdown now a distant memory, the Marine Corps Marathon will go on this weekend as planned. But in light of the bombing at the finish line of the Boston Marathon earlier this year, organizers have tightened restrictions on what runners and spectators can bring.

As in years past, everyone will go through safety check points to get to the start and finish lines. Runners will be asked to use a clear plastic drawstring bag in order to hasten the checking of bags. Here’s a list of items banned from the event:

For marathoners, 10K participants and spectators, the following items are prohibited from entering any MCM event location: hydration vests and backpacks like CamelBaks; glass containers; masks; and flammable liquids. Runners may continue to bring a personal supply of fluids. All items are subject to search and add to the volume being screened, possibly resulting in delays and personal inconvenience.

That’s right: None of this nonsense this year.

MCM director Rick Nealis told WJLA runners and spectators “need to be aware.”

“They need to be looking around. They need to be conscious of their surroundings as well as our spectators. You see a backpack, call and tell someone.”
