Sosefina Amoa—a 26 year-old nun-in-training who was arrested last week for allegedly killing her infant son—has been offered a plea deal by District prosecutors, the Post reports.
Amoa, who is charged with first-degree felony murder and cruelty to children, claims she didn’t know she was pregnant and, after secretly giving birth in the room of the convent she was living in, accidentally smothered the child to death to keep it from making noise. The Post reports:
Amoa, who arrived in D.C. from the Pacific Island nation of Samoa on Oct. 5, was staying with the Little Sisters of the Poor on Harewood Road NE. when she gave birth, authorities said. Amoa had told detectives she did not know she was pregnant and said she smothered the infant — who she named Joseph — because she feared the nuns would hear his cries.
Yesterday, at a hearing in the D.C. Superior Court, District prosecutors offered a lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter if Amoa pleads guilty. Prosecutors also said that, if Amoa is convicted, she would be deported back to Somoa.
While Amoa’s attorney asked for his client to be release, a judge ordered that she remain in jail until her next hearing on November 21.
