San Fermin is the project of songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone. While he is the band leader and primary songwriter, Ludwig-Leone has a cast of musicians and vocalists that make his music come to life. Using the lush voices of Lucius (who just sold-out Rock and Roll Hotel last week), singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, opposite deep voiced Allen Tate, San Fermin create story stuffed indie-rock that aims for grand ambition.
The band’s self-titled record released this year is more of a song cycle telling a story between a male and female character. “Sonsick,” an early highlight, is in the beginning of the story. Helmed by Wolfe and Laessig, the track has a post-Dirty Projectors futurist R&B feel, with both vocalists singing to the heavens retelling a story of the start of a relationship and how daunting and nervous one can be. Although the character in question “know it’s just another fuck” the character can still see a future with the person with “a dog” and “tee-ball games.” Taken outside of the main story , “Sonsick” is a strong single that is one of the band’s best efforts to date.
San Fermin play tomorrow night at DC9 with East Ghost. Tickets are $10.
