One of the two dogs Prince George’s County firefighters saved from a house fire has died.

Otis, a two-year-old chihuahua, died Sunday night, PGFD public information officer Mark Brady said on Twitter. The dog was surrendered to the SPCA in Annapolis because his owner could not afford medical care. According to Brady, Otis would not drink or eat, and could not stand. “The dog was immediately taken to a veterinary facility and was being treated for smoke inhalation and thermal burns to his throat and eyes,” Brady wrote.

On Saturday, Otis was willing to eat but still could not stand. Firefighters and citizens donated money for the dogs’ care.

Otis and fellow chihuahua Mylo were rescued from a house fire in Bowie, Md. last week and were revived with oxygen by firefighters. Mylo was treated at a vet for two days and returned to his family. Officials ruled the fire an arson and arrested Julian Martin Massiah with the crime.

Update: PETA says they will give the firefighters an award for their efforts. “Prince George’s County firefighters are truly heroes because they don’t consider their job done until all residents—both human and nonhuman—have made it to safety,” PETA senior vice president Daphna Nachminovitch said in a release. “PETA hopes the compassion and know-how shown by these firefighters will inspire others always to come to the aid of animals in need.”

The firefighters will receive a framed certificate, a letter of appreciation and a box of vegan chocolates.
