In October, D.C. punk music legend Ian MacKaye joined the hosts of NPR’s Ask Me Another to play puzzle games, talk about why we should take care of our teeth and tell very entertaining stories.

This DCist editor was in the audience that night and has the following tidbits, which didn’t make it into the final cut, to share.

  • Ian MacKaye describes himself as a dental missionary
  • He hasn’t had ice cream in 25 years
  • He doesn’t drink coffee: “I don’t understand coffee. The energy around that drink is nuts.” But he’s not against it: “It’s not a political thing”
  • He didn’t listen to The Clash after their first record, which audibly upset the audience: “I’m not trying to hurt your feelings.”
  • He also shared the story of when John Belushi invited him and some other punks to be on Saturday Night Live to dance while Fear played. It ended badly. Eddie Murphy told him, “Fuck you.”
