Eric Rivera Jr., the 23-year-old accused of killing former Washington football team safety Sean Taylor, was found guilty of second-degree murder and armed burglary today.
AP reports that, after a 16-hour deliberation over four days, the jury finally reached a verdict and found Rivera guilty. Although Rivera initially pleaded guilty to killing Taylor, he testified last week that he didn’t actually kill him, but that “Miami-Dade police detectives coerced him into falsely confessing to [his] murder.” The AP reports that four others were also charged in the case and three will be tried later. One of the suspects, Venjah Hunte, already pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and burglary charges, and made a deal with the prosecution for a 29-year prison sentence. All five of the accused men were teenagers at the time of the incident.
In Rivera’s defense testimony, he claimed that it was Hunte who shot Taylor:
Testifying in his own defense, Rivera claimed it was Hunte who brought the 9mm handgun and who shot Taylor. Rivera insisted that he was not told about the burglary plot until the group was driving across Alligator Alley toward Miami, and that he stayed in the car outside Taylor’s house the whole time.
A sentencing for Rivera has not yet been delivered, but he could face life in prison.
