Come out to time travel through Van Gogh’s pieces with Dr. Who, rock out to The Redd Brothers, and hear 15-minutes art talks. 5-8:30 p.m. $10-$12. MOVIES: Over the next four days, the 2013 Alexandria Film Festival will feature over 60 films from both local and international filmmakers. Tonight’s Opening Night event is “A Celebration of Food and Sustainability” at Old Town Theater (815 King Street, Alexandria). A series of short films on this theme will be shown, including: Capital Food Fight (followed by a filmmaker Q&A), This is Normal, La Sangre Rojo y Verde de Nuevo Mexico (The Chile Film), Baby Chicken, Grape, and This Dewdrop World. 7-10 p.m. Tickets: $12.
FOOD & DRINK: Eventide Restaurant’s (3165 Wilson Boulevard Arlington, VA) five-course Virginia Harvest Wine Dinner will pair Barboursville wines with oyster stuffing, roasted quail, duo of venison, slow roasted leg of lamb, and upside down pluot cake. Cocktails and hors d’oeuves at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $95 (plus tax and tip).
JAZZ: Joni Mitchell celebrates her 70th birthday this year. Many a jazz musician has covered songs from Mitchell’s extensive catalog and tonight Baltimore-based vocalist Marianne Matheny-Katz will pay tribute to the iconic singer-songwriter at the Carlyle Club. 7:30 p.m. Tickets $20 plus food and drink minimum. – Sriram Gopal
