A fire on an escalator at the Anacostia Metro station was reported this afternoon.
A Metro spokesperson said the escalator was undergoing scheduled maintenance when a worker’s rag caught fire. The fire was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported, he said.
Tim Wilson, spokesperson for D.C. Fire and EMS, said the department got the call at 2:46 p.m. The first unit arrived two minutes later. Wilson could not say how the rag caught fire, and Metro’s Dan Stessel also said they don’t know at this time what the rag came into contact with.
Update: Stessel emails, “The rags were ignited by sparks from welding activity that was taking place midway up the escalator.”
