MOVIE: Zombies infest a Southern California coastal town in the 1973 low-budget indie Messiah Of Evil that’s long on atmosphere but short on horror. Directed by Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz, the same year they wrote the screenplay for American Graffitti, Messiah of Evil doesn’t make a lot of sense, but it’s worth seeing on the big screen, especially for its pivotal grocery store set piece. The AFI tracked down a rare 35mm print for their Horror ’73: An Annus Horribilis at 40 series. With character actor great Elisha Cook., Jr. as a deranged bum. November 10 and 11 at the AFI Silver (8633 Colesville Road). -Pat Padua

BAD SCENE, EVERYONE’S FAULT: Hey ’90s emo/pop-punk nostalgists, now you don’t have to cry over a PBR and reminisce about the good ‘ol days in your darkened apartment alone anymore. Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault is a strident defense of emo, pop-punk, punk, and post-hardcore from yesteryear. No, you’re not going to hear any this mid-to-late aughts shit, strictly deep cuts: The Promise Ring, Drive Like Jehu, Jawbreaker, Braid, Texas Is The Reason, Jets To Brazil, etc. Also, it’s free. (Editor’s note: I am co-hosting this. Yes, this is shameless self-promotion. Journalistically ethical? Meh, whatever.). Free at The Black Cat’s Red Room. Starts at 8 p.m. — Matt Cohen
