To mark Veterans Day, President Barack Obama laid a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery’s Tomb of the Unknowns.

From the Post:

Obama arrived at the massive white marble tomb shortly after 11 on a chilly but sunny fall morning.

Against the backdrop of the pillared entrance to the cemetery’s amphitheater, and with the Washington Monument and the dome of the Capitol in the distance, he placed the wreath of red and white flowers in silence, then bowed his head.

A small crowd of tourists and aging veterans was on hand, along with black-clad security officers pacing the roof of the entrance.

“Today, we gather once more to honor patriots who have rendered the highest service any American can offer this nation – those who fought for our freedom and stood sentry for our security,” Obama said at the ceremony. “On this hillside of solemn remembrance and in veterans’ halls and in proud parades across America, we join as one people to honor a debt we can never fully repay.”

The Tomb of the Unknowns, or Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is protected at all times by Tomb Guards, who are soldiers from the United States Army’s 3rd Infantry Regiment.
