The movie theater boom continues.

An eight-screen Angelika Film Center will open next door to the popular Northeast D.C. Union Market in 2015. From a release:

This multi-screen cinema will offer luxurious seating and pristine digital projection with immersive sound systems. In keeping with its other cinemas, the Angelika will strive to offer Washington, D.C. the most interesting quality programming available. And, in keeping with Union Market’s progressive food offerings, the Angelika will serve a food and drink menu designed by Food Network/Cooking Channel veterans, Bruce Seidel and Chef Santos Loo.

Fancy!

According to the Post, the first outlet to report the news, luxury apartments or condominiums will be built by developer Edens on top of the theater.

Edens tested the idea for movies on the site, immediately north of Union Market between Fifth and Sixth streets NE, by holding drive-in shows nearby. But Edens Managing Director Steven C. Boyle said it wasn’t difficult to persuade Angelika’s owners to open there because of the explosion of creative energy he sees coming to the city.

“When you look at what’s happening to D.C., the transformation and the physical presence of creative people doing things, making things, to me it’s one of the most exciting things happening to any city in the country today,” Boyle said. “And we want that community of people, as well as the rest of D.C., to view Union Market as a place to reside or work.”
