Though D.C. has artists of many flavors and genres, there is no escaping the city’s hardcore past. While Dischord doesn’t release that many records a year, it doesn’t stop many bands from being influenced by the old D.C. sound. Jail Solidarity is a sludgy post-hardcore/metal band deserving of attention. With the simple formula of guitars, vocals and bass, Jail Solidarity makes noisy music that sounds like falling into the bowels of hell much like Swans. Like many D.C. bands before them, Jail Solidarity has a political bent. The five-minute slow-burner “Indifference,” which opens their debut tape Any Space, Whatever, is from what I understand a song against surveillance and large corporations all at once. Though I might misunderstand what the lyrics, the pummeling drums and heavy guitars are fantastic, making the track a required listen.

Jail Solidarity play with Night Beats and The Sea Life Wednesday night at Comet Ping Pong. Tickets are $12.
