Comparisons to such prominent musical virtuosos like Andrew Bird, James Blake, Michael Jackson, and Prince (OK, those last two may be self-proclaimed) may be warranted, but Lo-Fang—the moniker of local multi-intrumentalist Matthew Hemerlein—has certainly developed a style that is unlike any other. Combining an atmospheric orchestra of various strings with a low-key synth-pop rhythms and melodies, Hemerlein has slowly garnered a name for himself beyond the District. So much so, that he’s putting out a record on prominent indie label 4AD next year. In anticipation, he’s put out a video for the album’s first single, “Look Away.”
The track is like an aural kaleidoscope, with a chorus of catchy synth and string parts layered over a driving club beat and Hemerlein’s soft vocals. Appropriately enough, the video is like a visual kaleidoscope, with shots of Hemerlein silhouetted behind some trippy visuals.
