Scenario: It’s late at night, say 11 p.m., and you’re rushing last minute to whip up a batch of cupcakes to bring to your office holiday party tomorrow, because, you waited until the last minute and there’s no way you’re going to wait in that ridiculous line at Georgetown Cupcake. It’s all coming together when, suddenly, you realize you need eggs for the batter and—aw, shucks—you’re all out! But where on earth are you going to find eggs near you at 11 p.m. on a Tuesday?! Luckily, there’s now an app for that.

What’s Open Nearby?—a new, free iPhone app developed by Dotsquare LLC—allows you to find out what stores are open close by without having to look stores up on a website or call them. Instead, the app detects where you are, and shows a list of stores close by that are open. Currently, the app distinguishes stores between three categories—grocery stores, convenience stores, and bakeries/coffee shops—and currently boasts support from a bunch of national chains. But, Dotsquare LLC—a D.C.-based app developer—has added local, non-chain stores in the D.C. area as they test out the app.

Currently, the app is only for the iPhone, but the developer says they’re focused on perfecting everything on iOS before moving on to make it available for other platforms, like Android.
