Smith Westerns gets a lot of milage out of their rockers, but they are also known for their more subtle and quiet moments. The Chicago, Ill. three piece’s masterwork, Dye It Blonde, balanced the line between upbeat numbers and the slower ones fantastically, and with this year’s Soft Will, the band has smoothed everything out making a more sonically cohesive listen. The band is currently on their biggest tour to date, co-headlining venues with pop-upstart Sky Ferreira. While the two acts sound is different, both have overlapping audiences making the paring seem no so out of the blue. “Idol,” one of the aforementioned slow tracks on Soft Will, is a late night, early morning Smith Westerns after the party is finished. The guitars have an 80s bent that, if sped up, wouldn’t sound out of place on a New Order record.
Smith Westerns play tonight with Sky Ferreira and Brett at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are $20.
