Arick Woodhead was bred in the Montreal scene with bands like Grimes for a bit perfecting his avant pop music under the moniker Doldrums. Doldrums’ music varies from harsh noise to pop experiments akin to Black Dice’s later period records. Lesser Evil, Doldrums debut record, is one of the most interesting of the year, balancing the line between pop and experimental. With each listen the record unfolds and different sounds will catch the ear. “She is the Wave” is an intense glitch fantasy that has slow click progression of trap. Woodhead’s high-pitched vocals sound like a fever dream while the blips and blips of noises cascade all over the place like broken alarm clocks and sirens.

Doldrums play tonight with Sleigh Bells at the 9:30 Club. Tickets are sold-out.
