It’s almost time to go home for the day and—lucky you—we’re premiering a new song from local power-pop trio Black Checker.
The song, “Bagel Girl,” is off the band’s forthcoming E.P., Fast, and is a sweetly nostalgic ’90s alt-rock/power-pop-inspired jam, but with a bit of a punk edge thrown in for good measure. The song, which is about—you guessed it—the narrator’s infatuation with the woman serving him a bagel at a unspecified breakfast shop, combines lead singer/bassist Jim Cordes’ wailing, John Popper-esque (you know, the guy from Blues Traveler) vocals with infectious hooks and melodies from guitarist Tony Porreco, and a driving beat from drummer John Maestri. Although the distorted, crunchy riff in the beginning might hint at some ’90s pop-punk influence, Black Checker’s brand noisy power-pop owes more to the likes of Matthew Sweet and early Gin Blossoms recordings. Their new E.P. drops tomorrow, and they’re playing a special release show at Acre 121 tomorrow with The Dead Women and The Joads.
