Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds was released from the hospital this morning, CBS19—the Charlottesville, Va. affiliate—reports.

Deeds was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville early Tuesday morning after his son, 24-year-old Austin “Gus” Deeds, allegedly attacked him before turning a gun on himself and taking his own life. Deeds suffered multiple stab wounds to his head and upper torso.

Virginia State investigators are still looking into why, exactly, Gus Deeds allegedly attacked his father before shooting himself. Multiple reports that Deeds was discharged from a hospital due to a lack of psychiatric beds on Monday has led investigators to believe mental illness played a major factor. Deeds was reportedly released early because there weren’t enough beds in any nearby hospitals, prompting many to question the the quality of mental health services in Virginia.

On Deeds’ Facebook page, the following message was posted:

The outpouring of support from throughout the Commonwealth and across the United States has been overwhelmingly kind and comforting. Please keep Senator Deeds and his family in your thoughts and prayers. During this difficult time, we thank you for your continued respect for the family’s privacy.
