You get a new Supercan! And you get a new Supercan! And you, too!

Beginning in January, all residents who receive once-a-week trash collection from the Department of Public Works will receive a new 96-gallon Supercan. These 75,000 households will also receive a new 64-gallon recycling can, twice the size of the current one. Those who receive twice-a-week trash collection will get a new 32-gallon trash can and 48-gallon recycling can by July.

According to DPW, “once-a-week collections occur in Wards 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 and parts of Wards 1 and 2. Twice-a-week collections occur in Wards 2 and 6 and parts of Ward 1.”

The announcement was made this morning at a press conference by Mayor Vincent Gray, as well as Councilmembers Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) and Kenyan McDuffie (D-Ward 5). McDuffie proposed a bill in 2012 that would make Supercan replacement free to seniors. Next year’s replacement will be free to everyone.

According to the Post, residents will be allowed to keep their old cans.
