After 100 days, the National Zoo’s panda cub has a name.

Bao Bao was selected as a name for the female cub after more than 123,000 people voted online. The five name choices – Bao Bao, Ling Hua, Long Yun, Mulan and Zhen Bua – were selected by China Ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai, U.S. Ambassador to China Gary Locke and his family, panda keepers at the Zoo and from the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, and Friends of the National Zoo. The winning name, suggested by FONZ, means “precious” or “treasure.”

Bao Bao wasn’t present at Sunday’s naming ceremony, as she was hanging out with her mom, Mei Xiang, in their indoor den. She will go on exhibit in January and will eventually move to China, like her brother Tai Shan.

The panda cub wasn’t at the naming ceremony.

The name was unveiled on both English and Chinese scrolls at the National Zoo. The ceremony featured a recorded message from First Ladies Michelle Obama and Peng Liyuan.
