Councilmember David Catania is exploring a run for mayor, as the Post first reported.

The Independent politician, who heads the Council’s education committee, made it official today with an announcement and website.

“Improving our public education system is the key to the future of our city and must be our top priority,” Catania says in a message on the site. “When I became Chairperson of the Council’s Committee on Education in January 2013, I promised to tackle the challenges standing between our students and success. For me, this promise included rolling up my sleeves and leaving City Hall to talk directly with parents and educators.”

While his exploratory committee’s website makes no mention of the other candidates, Catania told the Post “I am … uninspired by the current mayor and by the field of candidates who seek to replace him.”

He continues, “There are many reasons to be optimistic about the future of public education in the District, but significant challenges remain. In the coming weeks, I will be exploring whether I can make a more substantial and lasting contribution to improving our schools as Mayor of the District of Columbia.”

As an independent, Catania would not have have to face off against Mayor Vince Gray and the other democratic candidates in the April primary. He instead would go up against the victor from said primary in November. Catania told the Post he is unlikely to make a final decision about a run until after April.
