OK, so we may have fallen for the Great Thanksgivingukkah Snowmergency Hype of 2013, but this time it will probably, actually snow this weekend. No, seriously.
The Capital Weather Gang reports that a nasty winter storm is moving toward our region and will likely hit on Sunday, resulting in a wintry mix that’ll begin late Sunday morning and extend into the afternoon. “The cold air damming [draining of arctic air from the north into the region] continues to look impressive and now it looks like the D.C. area has a chance of seeing its first inch of snow sometime on Sunday,” Capital Weather Gang’s winter weather expert Wes Junker says.
The National Weather Service agrees that snow may actually happen this weekend: “There is a potential for a significant winter weather event Sunday into early Monday. Precipitation will likely begin as snow before changing over to a period of sleet and freezing rain. Snow and ice accumulations are likely. Uncertainty remains high regarding the specifics of the event.”
So just how much snow are we getting? Well, it’s tough to say as we’re still two days out, but right now we’re looking at a 45 percent chance of more than an inch and a 10 percent chance of more than four inches. But the more likely situation is that we’ll get a little bit of snow followed by a lot of sleet and/or freezing rain, resulting in a messy mix of winter weather.
Precipitation of snow is predicted to begin in the late morning/early afternoon on Sunday, before turning to sleet/freezing rain into the late afternoon in the evening. Regardless, expect nasty road conditions for your Monday commute. If Davy DCist were here, he’d probably say something like “You want me to talk about a little f@*king snow? Go f@*k yourself!” But I can only speculate.
