After one final fundraising plea, organizers say the Lake Shaw Ice Rink will not happen this year.

As DCist previously reported, Lee Granados, president of Urban Neighborhood Alliance, wrote a letter to supporters two weeks ago asking for more “community support, partnership, interest from local businesses and a capital injection.” (See: Money.) Granados said they needed to raise $50,000 in order to make the approximately $200,000 project happen in December.

But now, the Post reports, that plans for the rink have been postponed until next winter. Here’s a statement from Granados.

After reviewing input from numerous stakeholders regarding Lake Shaw, it is clear that the best course of action is waiting until 2014 to open the community ice rink. By waiting until next year, we can ensure that the ice rink will have sufficient planning time, sponsorships and support.

We will be working with Old City Farm and Guild on winter activities (particularly around the 2014 Winter Olympics) over the next few months to build support and interest for the rink and community event space. This was a difficult decision to reach, but we believe that the extra time will ensure a smooth rollout of Lake Shaw in 2014. We hope we can count on your continued support, and will join our team over the next few months as integral partners.

There is good news on the ice skating rink front, however: the Canal Park Ice Rink, delayed by a busted pipe, will open on December 16.
