A D.C.-bound MARC commuter train from Baltimore struck an SUV early this morning, killing the two passengers in the vehicle.
According to a spokesperson with the Maryland Transit Authority, the accident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m. at the 2200 block of Hollins Ferry Road in Baltimore. The Post says that initial reports indicate that the SUV “went around” a gate on a railroad crossing and was struck by the train. According to the MTA spokesperson, about 20 people were on the train, all of whom were uninjured, and were taken by bus to a nearby station.
The Post also reports that the two passengers of the SUV were killed—one pronounced dead on the scene, and the other at a nearby hospital shortly after the accident. A request for comment from the Maryland State Police Department was not immediately returned. We’ll have more info about the nature of the accident when we hear back.
As of now, MARC trains traveling to D.C.’s Union Station from Baltimore have been redirected through a different track, and the MTA doesn’t expect any delays or issues for trains this afternoon.
Update: A detective with the Maryland State Police Department confirms with DCist that the two occupants of the SUV have died. The driver, a 23-year-old woman was killed on impact and the passenger, a 38-year-old man died at a nearby hospital later.
The MSPD detective tells DCist that the cause of the accident is still being investigated. “We will look at everything at everything from the time of the accident: weather, evidence, traffic cameras, witnesses, people on the train, everything,” he says.
