A Metropolitan Police Department officer is warning citizens that an attack in Bloomingdale has not been classified as an instance of the “knockout game,” though an investigation is ongoing.

A Bloomingdale resident posted a message to the Fifth District MPD listserv Saturday to report a Friday assault that occurred between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. near the intersection of First and W Streets NW.

“A male Bloomingdale resident left a rowhouse get-together and was a victim of a ‘knockout,'” the man wrote. “A group of people wearing masks ran up to him, punched him in the face and then dashed off.”

The victim, who did not want to be identified, told WJLA at least 10 people attacked him: “After the punch, I remember chuckling.”

An MPD officer responded to the listserv posting, saying a report was filed but “at this point in our investigation we have not concluded that the complainant in this case was actually the victim of a ‘knockout’ assault.”

“It should be noted that we aggressively investigate all assaults regardless of the suspect(s) motives,” he continued. “At this time, there is not an emerging trend to suggest that ‘knockout’ assaults are prevalent in our district.”
